{"id":15941,"date":"2011-04-15T15:01:12","date_gmt":"2011-04-15T19:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=15941"},"modified":"2011-04-15T17:20:14","modified_gmt":"2011-04-15T21:20:14","slug":"bloom-day-april-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=15941","title":{"rendered":"Bloom Day April 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Southern California, a mile from the ocean, zone 10, spring a couple months ahead of most of the country<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><big>With the grasses joining the frothy euphorbias in bloom, there&#8217;s now a supercharged atmosphere that animates the garden.<br \/>\nI love it when plants start to inhabit planes other than just ground level and do so with very little bulk.  The see-through plants.  Aerial fizz.<\/p>\n<p>Pennisetum spathiolatum shooting skyward amongst anigozanthos.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/2011\/415morning005.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Luzula sylvatica &#8216;Aurea,&#8217; the golden woodrush.  The bluer leaves are the Tradescantia &#8216;Concord Grape,&#8217; now blooming, this photo taken a couple weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/2011\/330morn010.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Euphorbia &#8216;Ascot Rainbow&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/2011\/330morn013.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Euphorbia characias &#8216;Silver Swan,&#8217; Libertia peregrinans, Salvia verticillata &#8216;Purple Rain&#8217; among blades of crocosmia yet to bloom.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/2011\/330morn024.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Annual poppies are still swaying, but not much longer.  Temps forecast in the 80&#8217;s for the weekend.  Salvia &#8216;Wendy&#8217;s Wish in bloom in the background.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/2011\/415morn012.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A magellanica fuchsia &#8216;Hawkshead&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/2011\/412morn010.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The alpine aloe, A. thompsonii, its 5-foot bloom stalk knocked nearly ground level by strong winds.  Just noticed yesterday two more buds to join the four in bloom.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/2011\/412morn015.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A nice geum from Annie&#8217;s Annuals, throwing up lots of bloom, G. magellanicum.<br \/>\n(Probably need to thank Ferdinand Magellan as well as Carol at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maydreamsgardens.com\/2011\/04\/garden-bloggers-bloom-day-april-2011.html\">May Dreams Gardens<\/a> this Bloom Day.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/2011\/49morn011.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>G. magellanicum leaning into Canna &#8216;Intrigue&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/2011\/49morn004.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yes, that orange is also adjacent to purple in the garden, fronting this iris relative from Australia, Patersonia drummondii, with very little information available on it.  Reminds me of blue-eyed grass\/sisyrinchium with more substantial flowers, the leaves taller at about a foot.  Purchased in the last month, probably just a spring bloomer.  Here in its nursery pot.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/2011\/48pat001.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here in the ground, flowers closed in the early morning.
