Seems it&#8217;s the same cast of characters every month.<br \/>\nBut if you&#8217;re in zone 10 and lack the space for big herbaceous drifts but still looking for months of bloom, you can&#8217;t go wrong with any of the following.  <\/p>\n<p>The dahlia I posted on earlier in the week, &#8216;Chat Noir,&#8217; livens up the roster this month, nestling up to silvery Athanasia acerosa.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom004-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;ve probably mentioned only about a zillion times that many, if not most, perennials cannot abide zone 10 conditions, but demand the dormancy of a cold winter.  So when one bucks this requirement, like Persicaria amplexicaulis, it becomes my hero.  Annuals would be a safer bet in this zone, but no annual has this kind of presence, in my book.  Except for maybe the flowering tobaccos.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom052.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still waiting on Nicotiana mutabilis to erupt into bloom, the one with the big paddle leaves, seen here with Gaura lindheimeri, a summer-long gift to the bees.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/910rain004-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve already started fall planting, thinning out the cannas, adding compost and deep watering the fall\/winter-blooming salvias.<br \/>\nSalvia &#8216;Wendy&#8217;s Wish.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom007.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bloom trusses on Echium gentianoides &#8216;Tajinaste&#8217; are getting smaller late in the season, but when you&#8217;re this shade of blue, size doesn&#8217;t matter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom026.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Amicia zygomeris.  Initially thrilled but now slightly alarmed at the robust vigor of this pea family member.  What a towering, kooky presence.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom025.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Crithmum maritimum.  I wouldn&#8217;t mind a maritimum garden.  Crithmum and Crambe <del datetime=\"2011-09-22T15:54:45+00:00\">maritimum<\/del> maritima, for starters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom017.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Coreopsis &#8216;Full Moon.&#8217;  The Euphorbia &#8216;Diamond Frost&#8217; overwinters in zone 10 so clouds of it engulf everything by September.<br \/>\nThis euphorbia supposedly doesn&#8217;t reseed, but I don&#8217;t remember ever planting this <em>much<\/em>.<br \/>\nAgastache &#8216;Purple Haze&#8217; putting up a brave fight but was seriously overwhelmed by its neighbors this summer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom023.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Salvia chiapensis and Mirabilis jalapa &#8216;Limelight,&#8217; which wildly self-sows.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915eve005-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Salvia &#8216;Waverly&#8217; is the mainstay for our year-round hummingbirds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom028-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Teucrium &#8216;Fairy Dust&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom032-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The faded blooms of Anigozanthos &#8216;Yellow Gem,&#8217; at least seven months&#8217; old.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom037-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Contrasted with the vivid colors of a new bloom stalk.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom034.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Russelia equisetiformis, a plant that just has to spill from a height.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom049.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Leycesteria formosa &#8216;Golden Lanterns&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom044-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Fireworks&#8217; gomphrena getting a late start from having to elbow its way out of the pack.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/sept2011\/915bloom016.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Salvia canariensis reblooming in fall.
