{"id":24135,"date":"2011-11-03T21:14:51","date_gmt":"2011-11-04T01:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=24135"},"modified":"2013-03-12T19:48:35","modified_gmt":"2013-03-12T23:48:35","slug":"villa-mundo-nuevo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=24135","title":{"rendered":"Villa Mundo Nuevo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big>This fall photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mitchellmaher.org\/\">MB Maher<\/a> revisited this Northern Californian residential garden designed by landscape architect Jarrod Baumann of <a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.zeterre.com\/\">Zeterre Landscape Architecture<\/a> and built by contractor Jim Everett of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evlandllc.net\/\">EvLand LLC<\/a> that won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clca.us\/trophyawards\/10\/gallery.html\">2010 California Landscape Contractors Association Trophy Award<\/a>. Daytime high temperatures very rarely stay below 50 F (10 C). Los Gatos rarely gets a hard frost. Los Gatos gets the slight winter chill that is needed to grow grapes and have vineyards. Certain types of bananas (the types that ripen in three months) grow well during the summer.&#8221;  (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Gatos,_California\">Wikipedia<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/C26T3680-119-23.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/C26T3654-109-17.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/C26T3668-115-21.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This bracing exploration of formalism in the landscape, rooted in a familiarity with classicism comfortable enough to playfully push it into the 21st century, might raise some eyebrows.  But it&#8217;s a timeless, region-specific response to a climate where people and garden can be inseparable 330 days a year.  A modern take on the Italian Renaissance garden in powder-coated steel.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/C26T3645-105-15.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Drawing on Mr. Baumann&#8217;s encyclopedic lexicon in formal gardens, whether Japanese, Persian, or, in this instance, borrowing from the French parterre.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/C26T3729-120-24.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/_MG_0610-102-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Baumann has created a strolling landscape of varying moods that energizes with clean lines, simple shapes, and high contrast.<br \/>\nA restless, invigorating collage of old and new landscape forms for 21st century design junkies.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/_MG_5061-6.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The steeply sloping hillside property and ongoing residence of the owners throughout construction imposed limitations on the use of heavy equipment during the two-year project.  Much of this complex landscape was literally hand-built, making Mr. Everett&#8217;s CLCA Trophy Award well deserved.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/C26T3658-111today7-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/C26T3627-102-14stairs.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rich in details to delight its owners.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/_MG_1394glass.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/C26T3795-127-26circle.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/C26T3657-110-18.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All the elements of a classical formal garden are here except for restraint when it comes to plants.<br \/>\nTerraces exuberantly spill forth puya, phormium, aloe, agave in celebration of the benign but rainfall-challenged climate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/_MG_5084-8.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/_MG_5132-9.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The serpentine wall along the drive up to the property uncoils a sinewy energy that continues to build throughout the garden and never dissipates.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/_MG_0962-104today1-3.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Drought-tolerant choices extend to plants in containers like this Aloe plicatillis and Libertia peregrinans.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2011\/_MG_1271jarrod2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tree aloe, Agave schidigera and echeverias.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2011\/_MG_1371today26.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2011\/_MG_1366today25.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The enduring leitmotif of all Mediterranean gardens, water, here courses down and through four terraces via a 100-foot concrete spillway.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/_MG_0620-103-3.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The almost 1.5 acre property included pre-existing driveways, pool and tennis court.  A children&#8217;s garden has been completed, while housing for chickens and a tree house are still in progress. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2011\/GiannandreaColorSitePlancropped.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2011\/_MG_1298today22-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/_MG_5075-7.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/watermarked%20los%20gatos\/_MG_5029-4.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this steel and glass loggia, or &#8220;wind room,&#8221;
