{"id":30681,"date":"2012-06-13T15:47:57","date_gmt":"2012-06-13T19:47:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=30681"},"modified":"2012-06-13T15:47:57","modified_gmt":"2012-06-13T19:47:57","slug":"the-spell-of-the-present","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=30681","title":{"rendered":"the spell of the present"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big>Though we may occasionally argue about what a garden is, I think we can all agree that what a garden does is cast a &#8220;spell of the present.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I loved this eminently quotable piece from Diane Ackerman a couple days ago in <em>The New York Times<\/em> entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/06\/10\/are-we-living-in-sensory-overload-or-sensory-poverty\/?hp\">&#8220;Are We Living in Sensory Overload or Sensory Poverty?&#8221;<\/a><br \/>\n<center><br \/>\n&#8220;<em>The further we distance ourselves from the spell of the present, explored by our senses, the harder it will be to understand and protect nature\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s precarious balance, let alone the balance of our own human nature<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/61012morn018.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>One solution is to spend a few minutes every day just paying close attention to some facet of nature&#8230;.for whole moments one may see nothing but the flaky trunk of a paper-birch tree with its papyrus-like bark.
