{"id":30713,"date":"2012-06-16T13:19:53","date_gmt":"2012-06-16T17:19:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=30713"},"modified":"2015-07-30T11:11:20","modified_gmt":"2015-07-30T15:11:20","slug":"bloom-day-june-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=30713","title":{"rendered":"Bloom Day June 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big><center>I got in too late yesterday for photos for a Bloom Day post, so made a head start last night on checking out the blogs linked on Carol&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maydreamsgardens.com\/2012\/06\/garden-bloggers-bloom-day-june-2012.html\">May Dreams Gardens<\/a> host site for Bloom Day.<br \/>\nI think that&#8217;s the best &#8220;issue&#8221; on June gardens I&#8217;ve seen in a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Summer-blooming bulbs like crocosmia and eucomis stirring here in June.<\/p>\n<p>Crocosmia and Teucrium hircanicum<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/61512eve123.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eucomis almost buried under a daisy with fennel-like leaves, Argyranthemum haouarytheum.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/61512eve003.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As with June Bloom Days past, white valerian seeding around at the edges.  The seasons-spanning kangaroo paws, succulents and grasses.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve been nibbling away at the bricks under the pergola, whose once-seamless perimeter is now as gap-toothed as a hockey player&#8217;s smile.<br \/>\n(<small>how &#8217;bout those Stanley Cup-winning LA Kings?!<\/small>)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/61012morn033.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Latest brick removal was instigated by finding a source for Eryngium pandanifolium, the Giant Sea Holly.<br \/>\nI sowed seed last fall of a &#8216;Physic Purple&#8217; variety but didn&#8217;t get any germination, and then it popped up a month ago on Plant Delights online offerings.<br \/>\nSometimes you&#8217;ve just got to scratch that plant itch.  Of course I had to squeeze some Ruby Grass in while the eryngo thickens up.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/P1016708.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More brick removal yesterday to try out Pennisetum &#8216;Sky Rocket,&#8217; a sterile hybrid from the same batch as &#8216;Fireworks.&#8217;<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve been on a destructive tear lately and have started hammering off the slippery tiles in the side patio too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/P1016705.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Onward and upward.  This summer I&#8217;m training Passiflora sanguinolenta up the pergola.  A rarity among passifloras, this one has proven to be a dainty, nonaggressive climber.<br \/>\nSidling up to Aloe distans at ground level.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/P1016696.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/P1016716.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not this Bloom Day but certainly by the next, I&#8217;ll finally get to see Lobelia tupa blooming in my garden.  I think the trick was thinning out plants possibly crowding it.<br \/>\n(Gosh, there&#8217;s a surprise, overcrowding in <em>my<\/em> garden?)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/61512bloom017.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>First spikes appearing on Persicaria amplexicaulis.  Salvia canariensis is more colored bracts than blooms now.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/P1016723.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Verbena bonariensis &#8216;Lollipop&#8217; in the iron tank.  Eryngium tripartitum barely visible blooming here too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/61512eve052.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One lone drumstick allium amidst eyebrow grass, Bouteloua gracilis.<br \/>\nI think the 29 other Allium sphaerocephalum may have been swamped by the burgeoning Mint Bush, Prostranthera ovalifolia &#8216;Variegata&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/P1016725.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And since this post has wandered into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penick.net\/digging\/?p=16660\">Foliage Followup&#8217;s<\/a> turf of the 16th of every month, hosted by Pam at Digging, I&#8217;ll close with a photo of  a restio new to me.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smgrowers.com\/products\/plants\/plantdisplay.asp?plant_id=2752\">Cannonmois virgata,<\/a> identified by San Marcos Growers as more probably C. grandis.<br \/>\nSMG&#8217;s photo shows the beautiful culms.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2012\/61512048.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was considering this restio to replace the rose I removed from the patio room, whose tile is being demolished&#8230;wonder where I left my hammer and chisel?<br \/>\n<\/center><\/big><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I got in too late yesterday for photos for a Bloom Day post, so made a head start last night on checking out the blogs linked on Carol&#8217;s May Dreams Gardens host site for Bloom Day.
