I&#8217;ll let him tell this adventure in his own words:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sawattsdesign.com\/\">Shirley Watts<\/a> messaged me to keep my Wednesday evening open.  And per her instructions,<br \/>\nI found myself on the 4.09 caltrain to Palo Alto, getting off at Stanford, and<br \/>\nwalking Palm Drive to the Oval.  (University campuses are pretty astonishing.<br \/>\nEveryone is fit, on bicycles, speaking in Latin, and quoting Ayn Rand.)<br \/>\nShirley revealed once we were in her pickup truck dodging freshmen that<br \/>\nProfessor Harrison (a speaker at Watts&#8217; own <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=47828\">Natural Discourse<\/a> symposium in<br \/>\nBerkeley last week) had taken her on a walk through the Stanford campus in<br \/>\nAugust, ending at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/~mjpeters\/png\/\">Papua New Guinea Sculpture Garden<\/a>, which she was now, months<br \/>\nlater, still dreaming and obsessing over, which was where we were headed.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/stanford1013\/_MG_0355.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo _MG_0355.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>According to Harrison, the University had flown in New Guinean tribesmen to make site-specific<br \/>\nwork on campus &#8212; the tribesmen stayed for a whole year to build a thick, rambling<br \/>\ninstallation of woodwork<\/em>.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/stanford1013\/_MG_0382.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo _MG_0382.jpg\"\/><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/stanford1013\/_MG_0439.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo _MG_0439.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>What I will say about my poor photo-craftsmanship is that<br \/>\nthese pieces snake and wobble and sway in a difficult fashion to describe with a<br \/>\n3&#215;2 frame, despite their complete unmoving rigidity. Their curves and meandering<br \/>\narcs are so pervasive and all-consuming, that if someone were to take a draftsman&#8217;s<br \/>\nt-square from their pocket and produce a right-angle in the garden, it would take<br \/>\nyour breath away<\/em>.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/stanford1013\/_MG_0404.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo _MG_0404.jpg\"\/><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/stanford1013\/_MG_0458.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo _MG_0458.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>So by way of excusing myself and speaking to the sinuous unmoored<br \/>\nbeauty of these wood carvings, I must explain that all horizon lines in the coming<br \/>\nphotographs are level and that the movement of the pieces is not a result of any<br \/>\nlens distortion.
