{"id":51393,"date":"2014-01-27T21:19:02","date_gmt":"2014-01-28T01:19:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=51393"},"modified":"2014-01-27T21:19:02","modified_gmt":"2014-01-28T01:19:02","slug":"just-another-acacia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=51393","title":{"rendered":"just another acacia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big>At plant nurseries, I&#8217;m often a hapless Mr. Magoo, peering and squinting at new shapes and wildly filling in the blanks with extravagant theories.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/jan2014\/P1012083.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1012083.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For example, the twisted, contorted stems of this mystery tree, or shrub grown on standard, reminded me of Harry Lauder&#8217;s Walking Stick (Corylus avellana &#8216;Contorta&#8217;).  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/jan2014\/P1012074.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1012074.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But what about that weeping habit of growth?  And those nubby protuberances, were they catkins?  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/jan2014\/P1012064.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1012064.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Okay, okay.  Up close, I see they&#8217;re not catkins but tiny, bristly flower clusters.   Long chains of yellow bloom.  Could it be a diminutive laburnum?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/jan2014\/P1012068.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.smgrowers.com\/products\/plants\/plantdisplay.asp?plant_id=2842 photo P1012068.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wrong again, Magoo.  Not with spidery leaves like that, which bear the hallmarks of a denizen from Down Under, where thread-like leaves are a necessary adaptation to scorching temps.<br \/>\nThe tag solved the mystery and stifled further speculation, as much fun as that was.  Just another acacia.
