{"id":61447,"date":"2014-11-15T10:34:20","date_gmt":"2014-11-15T14:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=61447"},"modified":"2014-11-15T10:34:20","modified_gmt":"2014-11-15T14:34:20","slug":"agaves-take-los-angeles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=61447","title":{"rendered":"agaves take Los Angeles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big>About a year ago I was told by a nurseryman that aloes have replaced agaves in popularity, because people have gotten wise to the approximate 8-year death spiral of agaves, the bloom-and-doom cycle, which isn&#8217;t the case with aloes, reliably flowering as they do year after year.  That may be true of private plant-buying habits, but no doubt as a consequence of the drought, agaves are proliferating across commercial landscapes like rabbits.   <\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s just one example of the many I see driving around town, this one found in West Los Angeles last week, near Sawtelle and Olympic. <\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1012075.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1012075.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>mass planting of Agave &#8216;Cornelius&#8217; <\/p>\n<p>The Victorians would be proud of the carpet-bedding effects we&#8217;re achieving with this king of succulents.<br \/>\n(Remember William Robinson&#8217;s naturalism rebellion against the gawdy, tic-tac-toe patterns of the Victorian bedding-out era, floral clocks and such?  Of course you do.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1012077.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1012077.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But William Robinson never had to contend with the dreary, narrow, commercial planting spaces fronting buildings all over town, and in a drought no less.<br \/>\nIn these contexts, the strong personality, pattern, and clean symmetry of agaves animates the planes of buildings and walkways.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1012081.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1012081.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And &#8216;Cornelius&#8217; adds his own unique twist of variegated sparkle.  Seen here with Senecio mandraliscae.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1012063.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1012063.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Agaves <em>own<\/em> this town.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1012067.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1012067.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What a great time to be an agave grower.<br \/>\nKidding, of course.  These are slow-growing plants, and tissue culture is expensive.<br \/>\nMy &#8216;Cornelius&#8217; at home needs maybe another year to look this good.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1012058.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1012058.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This unidentified beauty was found at <a href=\"http:\/\/dryjungle.com\/#\">The Jungle<\/a> nursery on Sawtelle, which is having a moving sale, everything 20-40 percent off.<br \/>\nThat pink tag sadly indicates &#8220;sold,&#8221; and there were none other available.
