{"id":64259,"date":"2015-04-25T02:10:42","date_gmt":"2015-04-25T06:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=64259"},"modified":"2015-04-25T02:19:17","modified_gmt":"2015-04-25T06:19:17","slug":"friday-clippings-42415-socal-spring-garden-show-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=64259","title":{"rendered":"friday clippings 4\/24\/15 (SoCal Spring Garden Show weekend)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><big><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springgardenshow.com\/\">Southern California&#8217;s Spring Garden Show<\/a> started yesterday, 4\/23\/15, and continues through Sunday, 4\/26\/15.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s always held in the enclosed &#8220;Home Store Wing&#8221; of the South Coast Plaza.<br \/>\nThis wing includes, among many other stores, Anthropologie, West Elm, Z Gallerie, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware &#8212; you know them by their envy-inducing catalogues.<br \/>\nScuttlebutt at the show today suggested that these stores, while appreciating the customers the show has historically driven to their doors, decided this year to thin that plant-mad traffic out a bit.<br \/>\nFewer plant vendors were allowed to participate so there would be more breathing room around the stores.<br \/>\nIn another twist, the stores partnered with local designers to create the show gardens.<br \/>\nHow did it all pan out?  Judge for yourself.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015606.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015606.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, relax, of course there were still tillandsias!  There just weren&#8217;t multiple vendors with tillandsias.  Redundancy was verboten this year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015582.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015582.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And there was still a sexy agave or two (Agave guiengola &#8216;Striata&#8217;)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015604.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015604.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Orchid lovers still had lots to ogle.  The epidendrums, or reed orchids, never miss a show.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015569-002.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015569-002.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A very lush and happy Abutilon megapotamicum grown on standard was in attendance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015557.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015557.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As were a few bromeliad tables.   This vendor had their flowers cut for a bouquet.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015590.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"gasteria photo 1-P1015590.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Succulents were fairly well represented.  I&#8217;m always surprised at how beautiful a gasteria is in bloom.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015570.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015570.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pottery<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015576.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015576.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But where were the really cool plants, the juicy show stuff?<br \/>\nI was on the prowl for the Flame Pea, Chorizema cordatum, which I had just seen at the Disney Concert Hall garden yesterday.<br \/>\nUp and down escalators to three floors, and no Flame Pea.  Fine, I&#8217;ll just head over to the B&#038;D Lilies table&#8230;okay, maybe not this year.<br \/>\nAdmittedly, I was a bit let down at first at the reduced number of plant vendors.   <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015661.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015661.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I headed over to Dustin Gimbel&#8217;s collaboration with Crate and Barrel and immediately cheered up.<br \/>\nSo much of what I see in his own garden and shapes he&#8217;s been mulling over in his work came through in this display&#8230;if not my photos.<br \/>\nPeople, these are plant show photos, weird light, funny angles,  arms and legs blocking shots, etc.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s a tiny glimpse of a majestic, over 10-foot Cedrus atlantica &#8216;Glauca Pendula&#8217; on the right.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015663.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015663.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I loved people-watching through this view<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015659.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015659.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More of that blue\/green screen, carefully sanded to let paint and wood bleed into each other.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015681.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015681.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like stories within stories, Dustin always plays with visual framing devices.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015655.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015655.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wands of hesperaloe weave through the octogon frames, some of which looked off kilter and precariously balanced.<br \/>\nJust another trick of the eye.  All were sturdily fixed in place.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015657.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015657.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A hesperaloe to keep an eye out for, with heavily textured leaves and frothy blooms, &#8216;Pink Parade.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015687.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015687.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Land Workshop&#8217;s collaboration with West Elm.<br \/>\nBy and large, the designers all used simple materials, clean shapes.<br \/>\nAnd studying the materials used to build the displays was a crash course in effective screens and fencing sourced straight from the hardware store.<br \/>\nThe corner is formed by pallets on end, the open top used as a planter.<br \/>\nThe slapdash screening woven with wooden slats reminded me a bit of <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=3374\">Stephen Glassman&#8217;s work<\/a> with bamboo.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015544.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015544.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Behind the gentleman was a short flight of stairs leading to a small sitting area<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015702.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015702.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A screen of aluminum pipes, painted in pastel shades, planted with Senecio vitalis.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015540.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015540.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another crazy angled overhead shot to show how this small area fit together.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015619.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015619.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015611.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015611.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At ground level was a sweet mosaic table, potted plants, and a raised bar\/dining area out of frame<br \/>\nThis display garden was opposite the Apple store, and foot traffic was very heavy around the perimeter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015617.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015617.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015709.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015709.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015633.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015633.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another display I liked was designer Camille Beehler&#8217;s collaboration with Pottery Barn.<br \/>\nI was particularly interested in the walls, the puzzle-fitted cement backer boards behind the couches for one wall, corrugated siding for another.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015632.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015632.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Potted palo verde tree, couches, bar cart, corrugated screen<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015624.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015624.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Multiples of blooming Aloe striata in square black planters on pavers edged in river stones<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2015\/1-P1015621.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1015621.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My humble critique?  While this show may have stinted on plants, the designers came up with loads of good ideas to fool around with at home.<br \/>\nAnd, mercifully, there was a welcome absence of over-the-top outdoor kitchens\/saunas\/fireplaces, etc.<br \/>\nNext year I&#8217;m hoping that a better balance can be achieved that accommodates space for plant vendors, good design, and the needs of the stores themselves.<\/p>\n<p><\/center><br \/>\n<\/big><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Southern California&#8217;s Spring Garden Show started yesterday, 4\/23\/15, and continues through Sunday, 4\/26\/15.
