{"id":69700,"date":"2015-11-04T20:54:29","date_gmt":"2015-11-05T00:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=69700"},"modified":"2015-11-04T20:54:29","modified_gmt":"2015-11-05T00:54:29","slug":"othonna-cheirifolia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=69700","title":{"rendered":"Othonna cheirifolia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big><center>I just had a panicked moment, several of them actually, trying to recollect the name of this very good plant that has prospered through this very challenging summer.<\/p>\n<p>I could only remember that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justagirlwithahammer.com\/2015\/04\/garden-bloggers-bloom-day-april-2015.html\">Heather<\/a> had blogged about it blooming in her zone 7 Portland garden in spring, which turns out is all I needed to remember.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/nov2015\/1-P1019216.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1019216.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Othonna cheirifolia, native to South Africa, chalky blue, spatulate leaves, going by the piratical-sounding common name of Barbary Ragwort.<br \/>\nSmall yellow daisies in spring are less compelling than the carpet of glaucous leaves that remains year-round in my zone 10.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/nov2015\/1-P1019227.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1019227.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To get a sense of just how blue othonna is, see its chalky blueness growing next to bright green Grevillea &#8216;Mt. Tamboritha.&#8217;  White felty leaves of ballota in the background.<br \/>\nTogether with their strikingly blue color, the slender, smooth-edged, spoon-shaped leaves effortlessly set themselves apart in a <del datetime=\"2015-11-05T00:44:57+00:00\">jumble<\/del> community of plants.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/nov2015\/1-P1019217.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1019217.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Growing at the base of a young Octopus agave (A. vilmoriniana), it&#8217;s had as much sun and irrigation as the agave &#8212; scorching in regards to the former, spotty with the latter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/nov2015\/1-P1019226.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1019226.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Leaf color just about matches the agave too.<br \/>\nOn <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=35686\">12\/7\/12<\/a> I blogged that it was &#8220;just found today,&#8221; so this is almost a three-year-old clump.<br \/>\nIf you&#8217;re after blue at a galloping pace, there&#8217;s always Senecio mandraliscae, the Blue Chalk Fingers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/nov2015\/1-P1019223.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-P1019223.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A subtle but remarkably durable plant with a tricky name to remember.<br \/>\n(There&#8217;s another othonna with the memorable common name of Little Pickles, a small-scale ground cover with blue succulent leaves, Othonna capensis.)<br \/>\nOthonna, Othonna, Othonna.
