{"id":73233,"date":"2016-06-09T10:53:32","date_gmt":"2016-06-09T14:53:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=73233"},"modified":"2016-06-09T10:53:32","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T14:53:32","slug":"last-of-the-poppies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=73233","title":{"rendered":"last of the poppies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big><center><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m just now starting to see photos of poppies in bloom showing up in gardens in colder climates, but by June the annual poppies are usually finished here.<br \/>\nIn my garden, as June continues the mild, overcast weather of May, there are a couple of holdouts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/june2016\/16445e64-1213-49c7-bf20-74c673e7437c.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 16445e64-1213-49c7-bf20-74c673e7437c.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never planted this variety, which looks like the simple &#8220;Lettuce Leaf Poppy.&#8221;  I note that they showed up in 2013, too, <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=40120\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n&#8220;Lettuce Leaf Poppy&#8221; and &#8220;Breadseed Poppy&#8221; are the politically correct common names, because we musn&#8217;t use the &#8220;o&#8221; word.<br \/>\n(For a great story on opium dens, you can&#8217;t beat Conan Doyle&#8217;s &#8220;The Man With The Twisted Lip.&#8221;)<br \/>\nMaybe it rode in on a poppy seed bagel.  My poppy show comes mainly from <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=39155\">Papaver setigerum<\/a>, which I&#8217;ve documented profusely on the blog.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s much smaller in stature than those towering in the photo above.<br \/>\nWith these much bigger poppies, when a new flower is open in the morning, it takes you aback, like someone shouting, &#8220;Hey!  Check it out!  Whaddaya think?!&#8221;<br \/>\nBut any poppy is OK by me.  Poppies are characters loaded with silky personality.<br \/>\nAnd there&#8217;s all that&#8230;um, history they carry, that illicit, pharmaceutical, double life they&#8217;ve led since prehistoric times.<br \/>\nPoppies and people and pain relief go way, way back.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2016\/may2016\/3501bb2e-fcad-48ae-a4c1-e9b6037e06b6.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 3501bb2e-fcad-48ae-a4c1-e9b6037e06b6.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s just these two plants left that germinated later than the first flush of poppies that got going in February and March, which is typical for Southern California.<br \/>\nDrip hoses and continuing overcast weather are responsible for these remaining two.
