{"id":9145,"date":"2010-10-31T13:10:56","date_gmt":"2010-10-31T17:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=9145"},"modified":"2011-02-05T16:44:35","modified_gmt":"2011-02-05T20:44:35","slug":"dutch-wave-breaks-over-new-amsterdam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=9145","title":{"rendered":"Dutch Wave Breaks Over New Amsterdam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big>At the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebattery.org\/gardens\/\">Battery<\/a>, Piet Oudolf has written another glorious fall chapter to the story of the renaissance of urban gardens in New York City.<br \/>\nHere at the Battery Bosque, the emphatic sweep of plants is at times even more dramatic than the <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=8924\">High Line<\/a>, in deeper soil with broader planting beds.<br \/>\nWith just these two gardens and now the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/08\/25\/nyregion\/25goldman.html?_r=1\">Goldman Sachs<\/a> headquarters, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/gardening\/gardenprojects\/8019864\/Dutch-new-perennials-wave.html\">Dutch Wave<\/a> gains force and continues to break over New Amsterdam. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/Fall%20Vacation%202010\/_MG_0521.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had seen the prototype of the Statue of Liberty in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jardin_du_Luxembourg\">Luxembourg Gardens<\/a> in Paris years ago, but this was my first glimpse of this wonderful gift from France on her island home.  <\/p>\n<p>These World War II <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviewoncities.com\/nyc\/eastcoastwarmemorial.htm\">memorial pylons<\/a>, rising out of a mist of Anemone japonica and grasses, align on an axis that leads the eye to Liberty Island.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/Fall%20Vacation%202010\/_MG_0539.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Surrounded by grasses bending and tossing in the winds blowing off the Hudson as it meets New York Harbor, the Battery is a splendid backdrop for ferry gazing.   <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/Fall%20Vacation%202010\/_MG_0529.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You will not find municipal plantings of the dwarf chrysanthemums seen elsewhere throughout the city in fall, but plants of great line, body, and character sheltered under plane trees.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/Fall%20Vacation%202010\/_MG_0543.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/Fall%20Vacation%202010\/_MG_0433.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/Fall%20Vacation%202010\/_MG_0547.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/Fall%20Vacation%202010\/_MG_0523.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/Fall%20Vacation%202010\/_MG_0533.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/Fall%20Vacation%202010\/_MG_0553.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/big><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the Battery, Piet Oudolf has written another glorious fall chapter to the story of the renaissance of urban gardens in New York City.
