{"id":100613,"date":"2022-03-16T13:16:16","date_gmt":"2022-03-16T17:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=100613"},"modified":"2022-03-17T14:35:14","modified_gmt":"2022-03-17T18:35:14","slug":"bloomday-march-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=100613","title":{"rendered":"Bloomday March 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>To save some repetitive photos, the aloes are mostly over, the grevilleas, passiflora, and anisodontea continue, and now these shaggy brutes are making their blooming appearance this week, the tree dandelions, Sonchus palmensis.  This is a plant with a big presence when its chrome yellow discs flare into bloom like a klieg light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/77806876@N03\/51921896706\/in\/dateposted-family\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51921896706_f046e8405f_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4788\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>I forget the age of this mother plant of all the seedlings scattered throughout the garden.  Over 6 feet tall, it needed staking even before the three flower heads began to bloom.  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/77806876@N03\/51922002558\/in\/dateposted-family\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51922002558_d1400d8ffe_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4830\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>Tree dandelions in the distance, coronilla in the foreground.  Pink flowers from long-blooming Anisodontea &#8216;Strybing Beauty&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Salvia &#8216;Savannah Blue&#8217; was clipped hard, so is dense and bushy and just about to bloom, and there&#8217;s three of them massed around that brown jar.  I&#8217;ll miss seeing that but am trying a few cuttings up north.  Teucrium betonicum and Geranium maderense &#8216;Alba&#8217; will be in bloom next week (edited to add photo from 3\/17 at end of post.)  There&#8217;s no telling if the Giant Fennel will bloom this year, or ever, but it&#8217;s pushing out a wedding dress&#8217; worth of lacy leaves.  The kangaroo paws will be up late April\/May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2n8DRPS\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51938786900_56d263e5ca_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4842\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>leaning over the emerging ferny leaves of the giant fennel, Ferula communis &#8216;Gigantea&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2n8CnRU\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51938497714_0c7bebf735_z.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4837\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And the Salvia greggii hybrids are spilling more and more flowers.  &#8216;Mesa Azure&#8217; has a particularly uniform habit of growth, hardy to zone 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2n8Cg64\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51938474929_61a06fdef4_z.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4889\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2n8DLc9\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51938767950_7f72c95545_z.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4887\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Salvia x jamensis &#8216;Nachtvlinder&#8217; has exceptional depth of coloring and velvety petals, but its habit slightly sprawls despite regular clipping and cutbacks. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature-and-garden.com\/gardening\/garvinea.html\">Garvinea<\/a> series is hardy to zone 7<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2n8Cmw4\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51938493199_99c5404a72_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4843\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another plant purchased locally for the Oregon garden, that I ended up planting here in Long Beach, Halimium x pauanum would struggle in the rich, moist soil up north. I have a feeling it will be very obliging on that score.
