{"id":28047,"date":"2012-04-11T11:29:25","date_gmt":"2012-04-11T15:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=28047"},"modified":"2012-04-11T11:29:25","modified_gmt":"2012-04-11T15:29:25","slug":"road-trip-destination-nevada-museum-of-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=28047","title":{"rendered":"road trip destination; Nevada Museum of Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big>As road trip season begins, with the price of gas being what it is, the question we&#8217;re all asking ourselves has to be, <em>Is the gas tank half empty or half full<\/em>?  <\/p>\n<p>I vowed to make a road trip to the Nevada Museum of Art earlier this year when its Director of the Center for Art + Environment, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wlfox.net\/\">William Fox<\/a>, popped this image up on the screen while speaking at <a href=\"http:\/\/naturaldiscourse.org\/index.htm\">UC Berkeley Botanical Garden&#8217;s Natural Discourse<\/a> seminar.  A gabion man!<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<p>Cairn, by Celeste Roberge<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2012\/Cairn_NMA.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Now I find that another artist at that <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=26506\">UCBG seminar<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/~gailw\/index.html\">Gail Wight<\/a>, will debut her video work on slime mold, <a href=\"http:\/\/us1.campaign-archive2.com\/?u=b4dcc5540cc94a723d26cddee&#038;id=6ffecb414d&#038;e=dbc5d8515b\">Hydraphilia<\/a>, at the Nevada Museum of Art from April 21 through August 26, 2012.<br \/>\n<center><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/april2012\/hydraphilia_email.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p>At the UCBG Natural Discourse seminar, Gail gave a hilarious account of the slime mold experiment escaping the lab and oozing into the domestic parts of her house and life.  As a layperson grappling with the overlay of art and science, she finds that &#8220;the obsession to make art is a neurological disease.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>At UCBG Fox spoke on the difficulty of making art in isotropic places like Antarctica, &#8220;the unnerving sense of disorientation that humans experience in flat, featureless landscapes,&#8221; a part of his &#8220;sustained inquiry into how human cognition transforms land into landscape,&#8221; or as he put it at the seminar:  &#8220;What I do is travel around the world in extreme environments and look at how to get lost and look at the ways we deploy both neurophysiology and culture to find ourselves again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both Gail and Bill are rollicking good storytellers.
