{"id":47305,"date":"2013-09-25T14:19:16","date_gmt":"2013-09-25T18:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=47305"},"modified":"2019-07-18T18:38:04","modified_gmt":"2019-07-18T22:38:04","slug":"cevan-forristt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=47305","title":{"rendered":"Cevan Forristt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My timid approach to incorporating a bit of the exotic in the garden got me thinking about gardens that boldly embrace the exotic, gardens that become a country wholly unlike the one in which they nominally reside.  There&#8217;s always a moderating influence that kicks in before I take anything too far.  But what if you&#8217;re not governed by moderation?  What if your compass spins in any direction your heart desires, and the country you inhabit can&#8217;t be found on any map?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/blog\/C26T7882-59.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo C26T7882-59.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nWhat immediately comes to mind is the work of garden designer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forristt.com\/\">Cevan Forristt<\/a> in Northern California, a long-standing, card-carrying, flag-waving member of the fabled Bay Area Hortisexuals, &#8220;<em>a ragtag band of truly possessed horticulturalists<\/em>&#8221; as Richard Ward, owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedrygardennursery.com\/\">The Dry Garden<\/a> nursery, describes the group of old friends.  (The Dry Garden in Oakland is where I finally found the fabulous <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=21676\">Mathiasella bupleuroides<\/a>, which didn&#8217;t last long in my garden.)  I was fairly certain that <a href=\"http:\/\/mbmaher.com\/\">MB Maher<\/a> had paid a visit to Cevan&#8217;s garden a few years ago, so I rang  him up.  Did he still have the photos?  He did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I got some [pre-1906]-earthquake stone \u2013 some Italian people in San Francisco five generations ago had piles of this stone. I got 800 tons from the old Grace Cathedral rectory. I brought back 100 tons from China.
