(It takes one to know one.)<br \/>\nThe infatuation wasn&#8217;t apparent at first glance.  This was a mature garden, well-treed, bambooed and shrubbed.<br \/>\nBut after every twist and turn, in every shady nook, another splash, blotch or stripe of variegata lurked, awaiting discovery.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Variegation\">Variegation<\/a> has multiple sources, and one of my favorite for wordplay purposes is chimeral; a plant composed of genetically different layers.<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/blog\/may2014\/P1015673.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1015673.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fallopia japonica &#8216;Variegata,&#8217; the Japanese Fleece Flower<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/blog\/may2014\/P1015618.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1015618.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Acanthus mollis &#8216;Tasmanian Angel&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/blog\/may2014\/P1015628.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1015628.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>variegated monstera, the Swiss Cheese Plant<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/blog\/may2014\/P1015658.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1015658.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>variegated alocasia<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/blog\/may2014\/P1015648.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo P1015648.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even a variegated pine, growing in a large container, Pinus wallichiana &#8216;Zebrina&#8217;<br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\nRare in nature, variegated plants are lovingly preserved and propagated by lovers of the outr\u00e9.  Seems like everyone has an opinion on variegated plants, whether it&#8217;s a preference for white on green or yellow on green, or no blotches, please, just stripes.  I personally can&#8217;t stand that Polka Dot Plant.  And there will always be those that shun them as an abomination of nature.
