{"id":59258,"date":"2014-08-27T14:29:32","date_gmt":"2014-08-27T18:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=59258"},"modified":"2014-08-27T14:29:32","modified_gmt":"2014-08-27T18:29:32","slug":"supergraphic-deborah-sussman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=59258","title":{"rendered":"supergraphic Deborah Sussman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/august2014\/DSslides.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo DSslides.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big>When I visited Los Angeles&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=33762\">Grand Park<\/a> for the first time, I didn&#8217;t know that environmental designer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/23\/business\/deborah-sussman-who-dressed-buildings-in-vivid-colors-and-shapes-dies-at-83.html?hpw&#038;rref=obituaries&#038;action=click&#038;pgtype=Homepage&#038;version=HpHedThumbWell&#038;module=well-region&#038;region=bottom-well&#038;WT.nav=bottom-well\">Deborah Sussman<\/a>, who passed away last week at age 83, was the force behind those shocking pink chairs and benches, a color Ms. Sussman energetically promoted throughout her 60-year career.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2012\/P1012537.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Her design firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussmanprejza.com\/\">Sussman\/Prejza &#038; Co<\/a> handled &#8220;signage, wayfinding, and amenities&#8221; for Grand Park, including its color schemes. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/august2014\/RCHS_GrandPark_simmons_IMG_8202AX.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo RCHS_GrandPark_simmons_IMG_8202AX.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>above photo by Jim Simmons found <a href=\"http:\/\/worldlandscapearchitect.com\/grand-park-los-angeles-usa-rios-clementi-hale-studios\/#.U_4IGvldUpU\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s52.photobucket.com\/user\/botanizeme\/media\/august2014\/deborah_sussman_interview_20.jpg.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/august2014\/deborah_sussman_interview_20.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo deborah_sussman_interview_20.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Garden markers (designed by Sussman\/Prejza &#038; Company) resemble oversized garden stakes and indicate the region, describe the climate, and talk about the specific characteristics of a featured plant within each garden. Magenta site furnishings throughout the park invite visitors to linger, enjoying its vibrant display. The vibrant color was chosen to act as a year-round \u201cbloom\u201d that complements the seasonal colors of the gardens<\/em>.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/worldlandscapearchitect.com\/grand-park-los-angeles-usa-rios-clementi-hale-studios\/#.U_4IGvldUpU\"> &#8212; World Landscape Architecture<\/a><\/p>\n<p>photo from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.designboom.com\/design\/deborah-sussman-interview-12-11-2013\/\">Design Boom<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/august2014\/deborah_sussman_interview_19.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo deborah_sussman_interview_19.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>photo from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.designboom.com\/design\/deborah-sussman-interview-12-11-2013\/\">Design Boom<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, there were many more celebrated projects before and after Grand Park, beginning in her twenties, when she worked for Charles and Ray Eames.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/august2014\/deborah_sussman_interview_16.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo deborah_sussman_interview_16.jpg\"\/><\/a>  <\/p>\n<p>I also didn&#8217;t know that Sussman had collaborated on the graphics and signage work for the Eames exhibit at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacificstandardtime.org\/\">Pacific Standard Time<\/a> when I visited that show at LACMA <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=25950\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/august2014\/deborah-sussman-designboom-07.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo deborah-sussman-designboom-07.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most famously, Ms. Sussman was the environmental designer for Los Angeles&#8217; 1984 Summer Olympics, the first since 1932 to make a profit.  Her brilliant sleight of hand with inexpensive, temporary structures such as scaffolding, bold use of graphics and color in signage, has brought her the status of the graphic designer&#8217;s designer.
