So many unnamed and\/or forgotten hybrids brought home from plant shows. But there&#8217;s one aloe I&#8217;ve recently acquired whose identity I&#8217;m betting will be unforgettable. And it happens to be in bloom, so let&#8217;s have a look, shall we?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1011899.jpg\" alt=\" photo P1011899.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Easy to remember because, first of all, it&#8217;s not a hybrid, so there&#8217;s just two words to its name. Elegantly simple <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Binomial_nomenclature\">binomial nomenclature<\/a> at work. Aloe scobinifolia, a stemless aloe from Somalia (aka Somalian Aloe)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1011870.jpg\" alt=\" photo P1011870.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Inflorescence in a capitate arrangement (&#8220;<em><strong>capitate<\/strong>: of an inflorescence, with the flowers unstalked and aggregated into a dense cluster.<\/em>.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>The name comes from the Latin words &#8216;scobina&#8217; meaning a &#8220;rasp&#8221; and &#8216;folia&#8217; meaning &#8220;leaves&#8221; in reference to the rough texture of the surface of the leaves that gives this plant its unusual dull gray-green coloration<\/em>.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smgrowers.com\/products\/plants\/plantdisplay.asp?plant_id=3593\">San Marcos Growers<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1011880.jpg\" alt=\" photo P1011880.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Memorable also for the pale, almost albino quality to the leaves. Doubly so because the leaves, though slightly raspy, are\u00a0 spineless.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1011882.jpg\" alt=\" photo P1011882.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I love this blonde-on-blonde look with the variegated St. Augustine grass. In rainier times, I wouldn&#8217;t presume to keeping this rambunctious spreader under control.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1011891.jpg\" alt=\" photo P1011891.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Long-legged in bloom, about 2 and half feet.\u00a0 \u00a0(Note:\u00a0 Since purchasing this aloe in 2014, I&#8217;ve had to move it from encroaching shade several times, but still it hangs on to a rosette of leaves.\u00a0 Try dry conditions in as much sun as you&#8217;ve got, but be warned it is very frost sensitive so zone 10 at least.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1011906.jpg\" alt=\" photo P1011906.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/nov2014\/P1011927.jpg\" alt=\" photo P1011927.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>the Somalian Aloe, I have just two more words for you: simply unforgettable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m terrible with aloe names.
