{"id":68545,"date":"2015-10-02T19:21:02","date_gmt":"2015-10-02T23:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=68545"},"modified":"2015-10-16T18:48:50","modified_gmt":"2015-10-16T22:48:50","slug":"the-siren-call-of-cycads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=68545","title":{"rendered":"the siren call of cycads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/1-_MG_3636.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-_MG_3636.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><small>a local Long Beach front garden, zone 10, south-facing exposure<\/small><\/p>\n<p>I recently chanced upon a house and garden that I used to drive by a lot more frequently.<br \/>\nHabits change, errands take one in a different direction, and in that unobserved period a cycad suddenly seems to have become enormous.<br \/>\nAnd cycads, as a rule, don&#8217;t do anything suddenly.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/1-_MG_3642.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-_MG_3642.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The most frequently seen cycad, Cycas revoluta, known by the misnomer &#8220;Sago Palm,&#8221; is probably the only cycad I can safely ID.<br \/>\nI think this is a Sago Palm, though I could easily be mistaken.  I&#8217;ve never seen one this big.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/1-_MG_1654.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-_MG_1654.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That little garden reminded me of the photos I&#8217;d yet to post of the cycad garden at Lotusland for you cycad lovers.<br \/>\nI admire cycads, though I haven&#8217;t yet come to love them.  I really should make up my mind, because it requires an investment of years, decades, to grow them to these sizes.<br \/>\nI know I certainly wouldn&#8217;t refuse a good-sized, robin&#8217;s egg blue <em>Encephalartos horridus<\/em> for a tall container. (Like I&#8217;d ever expect to find that gift-wrapped under the Christmas tree.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/1-_MG_1652.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-_MG_1652.jpg\"\/><\/a>\t \t<\/p>\n<p>Sorry, but I can&#8217;t help with IDs of these ancient plants.  I know they are very slow growing, so size equates with value, and it&#8217;s a huge big deal when they cone.<br \/>\nCeratozamia, cycas, dioon, encephalartos, lepitozamia, macrozamia &#8212; I&#8217;d be hard-pressed to tell them apart.<br \/>\nI do know they are one of the most endangered plants in the world.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/1-_MG_1651.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-_MG_1651.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, the best way to learn about a plant is to go to the experts.<br \/>\nAnd it just so happens that T<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cycad.org\/\">he Cycad Society<\/a> is holding a &#8220;Cycad Day&#8221; on October 24, 2015.<br \/>\nMaybe you needed a compelling reason to finally make that trip to West Palm Beach, Florida.  If so, now you have one.  You&#8217;re welcome.  \t \t<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/1-_MG_1645.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-_MG_1645.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Southern California source for these plants is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.palmandcycadexchange.com\/home\">The Palm and Cycad Exchange<\/a> in Fallbrook, California.\t \t<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/1-_MG_1642.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-_MG_1642.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lotusland.org\/event\/exceptionalplants2015\/\">Lotusland&#8217;s Rare Plant Auction<\/a> would be another source.\t \t<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/1-_MG_1641.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-_MG_1641.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I imagine they turn up at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huntington.org\/WebAssets\/Templates\/content.aspx?id=538\">Huntington&#8217;s<\/a> plant sales too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/1-_MG_1657.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-_MG_1657.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lush and deep green in leaf, some are tolerant of conditions dry enough to suit our native oaks, which don&#8217;t appreciate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2014\/jun\/25\/california-drought-sudden-oak-death-save-trees-infected\">excess summer irrigation<\/a>.\t \t<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/1-_MG_1655.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-_MG_1655.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cycads are members of that small, select group of plants dating to the Mesozoic period called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/plant\/gymnosperm\">gymnosperms<\/a> (&#8220;naked seed&#8221;), whose exposed seed are borne in cones.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/plant\/angiosperm\">Angiosperms<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/17\/opinion\/our-vanishing-flowers.html?ref=opinion\">relative newcomers<\/a> but now 80 percent of plants today, generally develop their seeds via flowers.<br \/>\nCredit cycads&#8217; good looks for making people wild enough about them to devote whole gardens to them in climates that can accommodate their needs.<br \/>\nThey hail from tropical and subtropical places, like South and Central America. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/1-_MG_1653.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-_MG_1653.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That improbable palminess via stiff geometric leaves on a stout trunk, plus their rarity and unique evolutionary status, are part of what turns ordinary people into devotees.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/oct2015\/1-_MG_1650.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" photo 1-_MG_1650.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au\/PlantNet\/cycad\/seecycad.html\">Where to See Cycads<\/a>.&#8221;\t \t<\/p>\n<p><\/big><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>a local Long Beach front garden, zone 10, south-facing exposure I recently chanced upon a house and garden that I used to drive by a lot more frequently.
