{"id":7144,"date":"2010-08-21T11:58:25","date_gmt":"2010-08-21T15:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=7144"},"modified":"2011-10-10T11:10:06","modified_gmt":"2011-10-10T15:10:06","slug":"dragon-fruit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=7144","title":{"rendered":"Dragon Fruit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big>The first bloom this year of the <a href=\"http:\/\/dragon-fruit.biz\/\">dragon fruit<\/a>, that is, the first bloom that I can see, dangling over a boundary fence we share with a neighbor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/?action=view&#038;current=821cer005.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/821cer005.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking a bit more carefully, I could see more flowers and even a fruit was already forming.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/?action=view&#038;current=821drag001.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/821drag001.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An epiphytic cactus, my neighbor grows it as a vine over trellising.  This is a different genus than the epiphyllum, the more familiar orchid cactus with the wildly intense colors.  These are enormous flowers, the bowl of the bloom at least 5 inches across, leaning against the fence bordering my neighbor&#8217;s property.  His property has become quite shaded from the amazing jungle he&#8217;s planted, and this dragon fruit or <em>pitaya<\/em> seems to be reaching for some sun.  Our driveway runs along this fence, so there must be good reflected heat as well. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/?action=view&#038;current=821cer010.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/821cer010.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My neighbor&#8217;s dragon fruit must be Hylocereus undatus.  I remember the flesh of the fruit being white when he&#8217;s given us dragon fruit in the past.<br \/>\nI&#8217;d never heard the name <em>pitaya<\/em> before today, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pitaya\">Wikipedia<\/a> entry on dragon fruit, nor knew that it  is native to Mexico, Central America, and South America.   Zone 10 or 11.<br \/>\nIt is believed the French <a href=\"http:\/\/infopedia.nl.sg\/articles\/SIP_768_2005-01-11.html\">introduced<\/a> this fruit to Vietnam.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/?action=view&#038;current=821cer004.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/821cer004.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More flowers in bud.  At the very lower left just a glimpse of the grey-painted pergola can be seen on which this cactus drapes, built over the walkway to his front door.<\/big><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/s52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/?action=view&#038;current=821drag006.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i52.photobucket.com\/albums\/g23\/botanizeme\/821drag006.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first bloom this year of the dragon fruit, that is, the first bloom that I can see, dangling over a boundary fence we share with a neighbor.
