I drifted away from restios for years because of their eventual ginormity but this winter returned to the fold with 4 one-gallon Chondropetalum tectorum, the so-called dwarf cape rush.  Miscanthus and muhly grasses were moved to give this restio a spin as possibly a better companion for winter-blooming aloes than grasses that need a cutback.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2ksaw7A\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50835557342_81db25e9cb_z.jpg\" alt=\"111011morn003\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>January 2011 <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=12168\">Agave guadalajarana<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2ks6shf\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50834763998_28eec2d407_c.jpg\" alt=\"116eve003\" width=\"534\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>January 2012 Ozothamnus &#8216;Sussex Silver&#8217; &#8212; also in the garden 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2ksago1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50835507776_62cfe9d082_c.jpg\" alt=\"P1015828\" width=\"535\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption><a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=36486\">January 2013<\/a> Agave stricta at UCBG at Berkeley<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2ks6BQP\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50834796163_15484e8ec6_c.jpg\" alt=\"P1012064\" width=\"534\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption><a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=51393\">January 2014<\/a> Acacia merinthophora, the Zigzag Wattle &#8212; in my own garden Acacia podalyrifolia is at peak bloom with Acacia baileyana &#8216;Purpurea&#8217; budded up and ready to go in a couple more weeks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2ksaqUW\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50835539846_319e77c3d9_z.jpg\" alt=\"P1011870 (1)\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption><a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=51016\">January 2014<\/a> Shrub-like Helleborus argutifolius was a constant presence for years, an exuberant reseeder.  There&#8217;s a couple small seedlings under Grevillea &#8216;Moonlight&#8217; but too small to bloom this year<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2ksaG5L\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50835590876_7b6c3a2b12_z.jpg\" alt=\"P1011621\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption><a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=50658\">January 2014<\/a> Coronilla valentina subsp. glauca, growing up a tuteur.  Its seedlings are about 2-3 feet tall &#8212; so difficult to capture its rue-like beauty in photos.  Xera Plants carried the variegated coronilla in 2020 and hopefully will again.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2ksaVvt\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50835636041_62489b3f22_c.jpg\" alt=\"P1012792\" width=\"534\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption><a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=62155\">January 2015<\/a> dramatic giant Aeonium &#8216;Cyclops&#8217; &#8212; this January the aeoniums are represented by small offsets of species tabuliforme, pseudotabuliforme and a leggy &#8216;Zwartkop&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2ksb1TY\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50835654166_db35a80814_z.jpg\" alt=\"1-P1010270\" width=\"640\" height=\"482\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption><a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=70703\">January 2016<\/a> Melianthus &#8216;Purple Haze&#8217;
