The Long Beach garden is throwing a low-key sendoff, mainly with the blooming of Geranium maderense ‘Alba.’ It is almost distracting enough to take my mind off the delayed cutback urgently needed right now in the Oregon garden — possibly needed weeks ago. Neighbors blithely emailed that a large branch from their tree fell into our garden, oops! and another section of fence is failing, so any distraction is welcome. I can’t help contrasting this drowsy, relaxed spring in Long Beach with the time-sensitive rush of things to do in Oregon when we return mid-April — can’t wait to get started!
This biennial has been reseeding in the garden since its introduction here in 2011.
A new experiment involves rigging sprinklers on timers for 20 minutes every four days.
Between the upcoming move and the devastating news cycle…yikes, I’ll say no more. Hope you’re managing as well as possible too. Take care, more soon. AGO

Lovely geranium.
I am chomping at the bit to get to my Oregon garden as well. At least we – so far – haven’t heard about any tree limbs. But the deer have probably destroyed any PC iris blooms that showed, along with creating new trails through my garden beds over the winter. I love being in Los Osos and don’t want to rush our departure (when the weeds will begin having their way with that garden) but I’m anticipating an extremely busy May in Astoria!
Jane, I’ve got to remember to check in more often on IG to see what you’re up to in both gardens. Good luck with the transition north this year!
Things are growing gangbusters up here in Oregon. I like how the color changes on your G. maderense. I avoided looking at the news all last week while I was on vacation, then checked in today during my lunch break now that I am back at work. Big mistake. I’ll stick with the plants, thank you very much.
Jerry, gangbusters you say! Sounds like a blissful vacation, no new for a week…
What a fantastic change, you and your gardens clearly thrive on this schedule/lifestyle! The Geranium is cool and fresh, it’s repeated itself really pleasantly. Did the neighbor just leave the branch there?! Oh my G, I hope it’s not too bad.
Tracy, the neighbors advised us of the tree-cutting accident, so we opened the gates for access — as far as we know, branch hasn’t been removed. Yeah, that geranium seeded in a nice band around the base of the fernleaf acacia, and I just removed any others not needed.
Oh man… I hope the branch didn’t cause any serious damage. Happy travels!
Loree, I rarely take pbotos before cleanups but I’m going to try to make an exception in this case. Wish I could be at Hortlandia! Have a great time.
Your geranium is gorgeous, I love those large dissected leafs!
I’ve gone down the internet rabbit hole searching geranium maderense and geranium palmatum: apparently nurseries get the two mixed up, as both names were on the tag of the geranium I recently purchased… Sadly it isn’t hardy in my north Seattle garden, so I’ll treat it as an annual. I can only dream it will look like yours by summer’s end.
